Jamaica’s fifty-ninth Independence Day comes at a time when the country is excelling at the Tokyo Olympics, bringing a feeling of hope, joy and pride to citizens who have been rocked by grief, suffering and immense pain. Yet, we celebrate the nation’s independence while remembering the meaning behind the flag’s color of Black, green and gold: Hardships there are, but the land is green and the sun shines.
